The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara serves over 1,200 local youth and their families. Our Club is staffed by paid, trained youth development professionals who, through a system of informal guidance, form strong bonds with young people and help them make smart choices in life. For many Club members, Club staff are the most influential positive adult role model in their lives. Check out our HOMEWORK HELP program.
Character & Leadership Development – Empower youth to become global citizens who support and influence their Club and community; sustain meaningful; sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image and good character, and respect their own and others’ cultural identities. Programs in this area include Torch Club, Youth of the Year, Youth of the Month
Education & Career Development - Enable youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, set goals, explore careers, prepare for employment and embrace technology to achieve success in a career. Programs in this area include: Computer Training, Homework Club (also known as Power Hour**), One-on-One Math Tutoring, Junior Staff.
Health & Life Skills – Develop young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults. Programs in this area include Smart Moves***, Club Snack, Passport to Manhood, Girls Rule & Boys Voices.
The Arts – Encourage youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing. Programs in this area include Ceramics, Painting, Drawing & Crafts, Hip Hop, Break Dancing, Ballet and Flamenco/Spanish Danceand Theater of Imagination – a performing arts group.
Sports, Fitness & Recreation – Programs develop fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and social skills. Programs in this area include In-House Basketball League, In-house Soccer League, Ballers- Traveling All-Star Basketball Team, Field Trips, Overnighters at the Club and the Games Room.
The Torch Club is a small-group leadership and service club for boys and girls ages 11-13. The Torch Club is a powerful vehicle through which Club staff meet the special character development needs of younger adolescents at a critical stage in their development. Torch Club members learn to elect officers and work together to implement activities in four areas: service to Club and Community, education, health and fitness and social recreation. In Santa Barbara, our Torch Club meets once a week to collect litter and remove graffiti throughout Santa Barbara. They have also adopted East Beach and work with the City of Santa Barbara by picking up litter and cigarette butts. Members also help at Club events such as our Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Party or annual auction.
Power Hour is a creative and engaging homework help and tutoring program that encourages Club members ages 6-12 and 13-18 become self-directed learners. In addition, the Power Hour program provides Club staff with best practices for recognition and incentives, behavior management, volunteer recruitment and training, collaboration with other organizations and use of technology and the internet.
Working with children as a volunteer can be extremely rewarding. The thanks you will receive will often be subtle, but the academic and social accomplishments that you help nurture, the precious emotional bonds you forge with the Club participants, and the staff’s genuine feelings of gratitude will ensure you a successful Volunteer experience with the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara.
All Volunteers are given an orientation, and must comply with a strict screening process.
Volunteer opportunities are currently available in the following areas: Education (tutoring & homework assistance), Technology/Computers, Teen Room (13-18 year olds), Arts and Crafts, Snack Preparation, Athletics, Game Room, Health & Life Skills.
