Sharing art with our kids2
Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time. -Thomas Merton
We live in a community filled with opportunities both big and small that allow us to expose our kids to music, theater and art. Take time this summer to try something new as a family…
- Music… Attend concerts at the SB County Bowl or enjoy bands at Music at the Ranch or Concerts in the Park. Listen to chamber music or opera at the Lobero.
- Theater… See a musical under the stars at PCPA in Solvang, attend a show at the Marjorie Luke or Granada. Sign up for the UCSB Arts & Lectures series and enjoy music, dance and great speakers.
- Art… Take a field trip to the SB Museum of Art, spend your Sunday walking along Cabrillo Blvd and enjoy the creative talents of local artisans at the weekly SB Arts & Crafts show, Take a day trip the SLO Children’s Museum. Explore one of our many museums… SB Museum of Natural History, The Sea Center, SB Maritime Museum, South Coast Railroad Museum or the Reagan Ranch Museum.
Most children have a natural enthusiasm and curiosity for the arts when they are young. Continuing their exposure to the arts as they grow will help maintain their interest. Art is often an everyday part of life that we do not always recognize that our kids are either observing or actively participating in… listening to music, painting, dancing and acting.
There are many ways as a parent to continue teaching an appreciation of the arts. Explore museums in your community and when you travel. Point out buildings and the different types of architecture around town. Attend plays and musicals at the local schools and theaters. Show you kids how to photograph people, landscapes and objects. Sign your kids up for lessons and camps focused on dance, theater, music, and art so they can learn for themselves what it means to express themselves.
This summer, make sure to calendar in some time to visit the special exhibits at all our different museums. Ask about family memberships and special events for children.
