Moms wear multiple hats0
“When I’m working, I feel like I should be with my kids. But when I’m with my kids, I feel like I should be working.”
It is exhausting trying to balance it all. I have been told many times in the past sixteen years, just quit your job, your children need you more. Why do you put all this extra stress on yourself? The time with your children is going to be gone so quickly, parent now and work later.
These things are all true however the flip side is many of us need two incomes in our families. I took the first two years off after my babies were born and I loved my time with them however I also missed working. Going back to work and in my case starting a business has been a juggling act and is not always easy but I am not sure that I would want to give it up either. I love being a mom and I love having a career and I want my children to know they have those same choices in life.
The challenges I had when they were toddlers are so different than it is now with teens. I remember trying to get on conference calls while nursing a baby or chasing a toddler. Initially I tried to work around nap times or to jump on the computer when they were occupied with their toys but eventually I had to admit that I needed to get help if I was really going to work out of a home office. My children were better off with a sitter a few hours a day who was devoted to playing with them and I was so much more productive with my time.
Now with teenagers, I have plenty of time during their school day to work but juggling the afternoon carpools when I have meetings to attend can be tricky. So again, I have to be creative and flexible. I still have guilt over working and yet I also think I have been a good role model to my daughters. They are starting to think about colleges, career and their futures and they know from their childhood that they have lots of choices available to them.
There is no magical system for balancing motherhood and work and it is different in every family. It is important though to find time to take care of you in the process!
